APPROVAL CRITERIA

ABC For Adoption has no set approval criteria or predetermined requirements regarding religion, size of existing family, or proof of infertility.  The median age of ABC's potential adoptive parents is 39.5 years.  Our staff has worked with parents from a wide range of professional backgrounds, religious preferences as well as highly diverse racial and ethnic affiliations.  ABC works with applicants who are willing to explore and share their feelings about adoption.  They have the sensitivity and ability to have compassion and respect for the birth parents who are considering placing their child into their hearts and homes through adoption.   Pre-adoption counseling, information gathering and sharing adoptive stories with other adoptive couples is highly encouraged.  Home study approval in Illinois requires that prospective adoptive parents receive adoption education either through the auspices of ABC, or through other means approved by ABC.  Our programs and policies demonstrate respect for all parties in the process.  We have seen first hand the good things that can come from a successful adoption.
ABC Adoption does not restrict potential parents from working with other adoption resources.  We do not require that adoptive couples work exclusively with ABC.  All adoptive parents are encouraged to examine every legal avenue for completing a successful adoption. Since no agency or adoption organization can guarantee a placement of a child, it is very important that a whole range of adoption options be explored.  Potential adoptive parents have the right to examine and pursue as many legal ways of adopting as they can afford both emotionally and financially.  ABC encourages both birthparents and adoptive parents to design their own adoption plans.  With the exception of ensuring that adoptions remain well within the confines of the law governing adoptions, there is no set or predetermined way to proceed in the adoption process.
Both parties involved in the adoption process need to think and decide what is the most comfortable in their specific set of circumstances.  ABC programs work with the birth parents and potential adoptive parents on a basis of mutual respect.  The core experience and knowledge in adoption enables ABC to support potential adoptive parents and birth parents in making one of the most important, permanent decisions of their lives.  At all times ABC remains direct and clear with, and accountable to, all the people we serve.  ABC will never knowingly mislead a client or make a unilateral decision regarding birth parents or adoptive parents.  Our program works on the basis of mutual respect for all parties, the adoptive parents, the birth parents and ABC For Adoption.
